The Heart Failure Society (Singapore) Annual Scientific Meeting 2026 was successfully held on 25 July 2026 at the Grand Hyatt Singapore. This year’s meeting focused on the growing understanding that Heart Failure was not a single organ disease, but that of a cumulation of pathologies involving the heart, kidneys and endocrine system amongst others.

We kicked off the day with Dr Tan Li Ling who gave a talk titled “Echo 101: Understanding an Echo Report”. Targeted at Allied health professionals, the talk gave a good introduction on the basics of looking through the echocardiogram report, as well as some more advanced techniques like strain imaging which is relevant to specific cardiac pathologies.

Next up Dr Loh Guek Leng gave a cryptically named talk “Stepsisters of HF GDMT”. While heart failure therapy was guided by the “4 pillars of therapy” there are multiple newly developed treatment modalities which have not been enshrined into the guidelines as yet. This talk gave insights on to the emerging role of these options, including Finerenone (non steroidal minerocorticoid antagonist), GLP1-agonist/ GIP agonists and shingle vaccination. This gave our audience an advance look into therapies which will no doubt be core therapies in the near future.

The afternoon session started off with the Plenary Session: Latest Updates in Management of HFpEF by Prof David Sim.  Our understanding of this disease entity continues to grow everyday and Prof Sim’s talk was an engaging insight into the modern concepts and management of this problem.

The plenary session was follow by a talk “Natriuretic Peptide-guided Early intervention” by Dr Tan Chong Keat and “Tackling Obesity in Heart Failure” by Dr Lee Ying Shan.

Of particular significance is the talk by Dr Lee who was the first endocrinologist to address our Scientific Meeting, a testament to the growing need for collaborative efforts to management what is emerging as a multi-organ dysfunction.

Our meeting continued with Dr Manish Kaushik speaking to us about “Cardiorenal Syndrome and Chronic Kidney Disease in Heart failure”.  The 2 organs are closely intertwined and Dr Manish gave us a comprehensive summary on contemporary understanding of their interactions.

Next we had Dr Hanna K. Gaggin from the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, who spoke to us about Cardiac Amyloidosis “From Red Flags to Disease Modification: A Real-World ATTR-CM Case”.  Her talk encompassed all aspects of ATTR Cardiac amyloidosis, from its early recognition, screening, diagnosis and current management. It was exciting to hear about the new therapies like gene silencers (eg. Vutrisiran) which will be widely available in Singapore soon.

Dr Khoo Chun Yuan then followed up with a talk “Frailty in Amyloidosis” which delved into an important topic that was not commonly talked about.
The meeting came to a close after an engaging panel discussion.

This is no doubt to start of many collaborations to share scientific knowledge between the heart failure communities in both countries and we eagerly await our next meeting.

World Heart Day is commemorated annually on 29 September. This year, the Singapore Heart Foundation organised the Limbang-SHF Health Carnival on 28 Sep 2024, themed “Know Your Numbers”. The Heart Failure Society (Singapore) had the privilege to be invited and represented by Dr Lin Weiqin, we presented the talk “Introduction to Heart Failure – What do I need to know?”.

This was well received and we look forward to collaborating next year with the Singapore Heart Foundation in its activities.

HFSS ASM 2024 - 1x

The Heart Failure Society (Singapore) Annual Scientific Meeting 2024 was successfully held on 27 July 2024 at the Pan Pacific Singapore. This year’s meeting focused on the multi-disciplinary approach to managing heart failure.

Kicking off the proceedings in Session 1 was the Nursing and Allied Health Practitioner Symposium, where we learnt about how diet, physical activities and psychological well being can affect a patient with heart failure.

The theme of Session 1 was certainly team-work as it was evident that in a patient with heart failure, there are multiple aspects of care that are can be more patient-centric and that each member of the health care team, from nurses, therapists, psychologists, dieticians and medical doctors have their unique role to play.

Up next was lunch! Which was easily the most popular event of the day! There were also booths showcasing the latest devices and medications from our generous sponsors (that we unfortunately did not have pictures of everyone who was there).

Session 2 continued with updates of the management of heart failure based on latest guidelines. New this year was a focus on interactive sessions and a live chat session which allows for interaction between the speakers as well as the audience. We also invited our General Practitioner colleague and Community Pharmacist partners to join in the discussion of “Integrated Heart Failure Management Across the Continuum of Care, Titration Strategies and Community Heart Failure Efforts”
